The Dangers of Combining Alcohol and Driving

Did you know what this month is? Yeah, it’s December. Very funny. But it’s also something else: National Impaired Driving Prevention Month.

Once known as National Drunk and Drugged Driving Prevention Month, this designation makes sense. December is a busy time. A lot of people attend parties to celebrate various holidays during this month. Many of these parties feature alcohol.

In fact, New Year’s Eve often features alcohol prominently. I’ve attended New Year’s Eve parties at banquet halls and different homes. Both settings featured alcohol, including champagne to toast the new year.

I don’t think that there’s anything inherently wrong with drinking. It’s just like must things, moderation seems to be the key. Drinking until someone can barely move, or drinking to pass out, are not healthy for people. Drinking or using drugs and driving is also obviously dangerous. It puts the drinker AND innocent people at risk.

Today, drinking or drugged driving seems even easier to avoid than ever. Depending on where you live, you can call driving services or cabs if you’ve had too much to drink. You can take public transportation or can designate a driver. If you have particularly generous hosts, you can make arrangements to stay with them. You can host parties yourself so you don’t have to leave your home.

You can also avoiding drink too much in the first place. Even though many celebrations feature alcohol, it doesn’t mean that everyone at the celebrations is drinking it. There are your designated drivers, for one. There are other people who don’t drink because they don’t like the taste of alcohol. Other people don’t drink because they’re recovering from alcohol abuse. Other people don’t drink for religious reasons. Still others can’t drink because of medical conditions.

So, if you think that you have drink and that you’re the only one not drinking, look around you. You probably have more company than you think.
