Timeline of Alcohol Withdrawal

Withdrawal from alcohol is a challenge for anyone who is trying to detox. The severity of the process all depends on a plethora of factors such as how long the individual has been dependent for and how much liquor they consume on a daily basis.

Alcohol detox itself typically lasts about a week with the climax happening after seventy-two hours. Once the individual has made their way past this time-period the symptoms will begin to gradually fade away.

Time Line:

First eight to twenty-four hours:

  •  Symptoms of alcohol withdrawal start show:
    • Insomnia
    • Anxiety
    • Nausea

Twenty-four to seventy-two hours:

  • More severe symptoms begin:
    • High blood pressure
    • Unusual heart-rate
    • Confusion

Seventy-two hours+:

  • The withdrawal climax happens with the most severe symptoms:
    • Possible seizures
    • Hallucinations
    • Fever

All symptoms gradually fade away roughly after a week and each day that passes will become easier. Cravings and temptation will exist moving forward, but the victory is to be in control of those vices.

It is important to communicate with your medical professional when detoxing from alcohol withdrawal as up to five percent of patients die from DTs (Delirium Tremens).

People at risk for DTs have typically been drinking heavily for years an individual will experience extreme hyperactivity of the automatic nervous system as well hallucinations.

This is usually seen when those with an alcohol dependency have their consumption cut off abruptly. While this sounds terrifying, one can easily deplete the chances of this happening with taking proper medication and communicating with their doctor during the detox process.

The detox process is not meant to be easy, it is an uphill battle that one should feel proud to take on. Remember, the detox is the reward for oneself. Courage, determination, and motivation are ingredients for this recipe and these traits exist in each and every person.
