Is Stoner Humor Really That Funny?

Yes, the 2000 movie Dude, Where’s My Car? has a funny title. It also, unfortunately, contributes to the long tradition of marijuana-based (stoner) humor in the movies.

This humor minimizes what drugs such as marijuana can really do to your life. Abusing substances such as marijuana, other drugs, and alcohol could do much more than cause you to forget where you parked your car.

In fact, when you think about it, the premise of the movie is scary. The main characters in Dude, Where’s My Car? can’t find their car because they probably parked it while they were high on marijuana. This means that one of them was driving while he was high.

That idea is frightening. Driving under the influence of marijuana is a very bad idea. Marijuana can cause you to perceive things in different ways and slow down your reaction time. If a pedestrian walks in front of your car, you might not be able to use your car’s brakes in time. This means that people under the influence of drugs can harm others as well as themselves.

This is especially important to remember because many people consider marijuana to be less harmful than other substances. There is an ongoing debate regarding whether marijuana is physically addictive. But whether it is or it isn’t, marijuana can still hurt or even ruin person’s life or the lives of others. We see this in the marijuana-caused car accidents we discussed earlier.

People who use marijuana regularly also show signs of dependency on marijuana. They spend a lot of time thinking about and using marijuana. They are spending time, energy, and money that they can use on other things. In fact, these marijuana users might abandon their jobs, studies, hobbies, or relationships because so much of their lives revolve around marijuana.

So maybe we can discuss marijuana a little more maturely. It isn’t just some goofy substance that causes people to do goofy things.
